On “The National” tonight, reports that next week, the United States may recognize Jerusalem as the capital of Israel. That would be an extremely controversial move. That’s because Palestinians lay claim to East Jerusalem while Israel claims the city as its seat of government. The broader international community beyond the U.S. believes the dispute should be resolved in a wider peace agreement.”

In actuality, the reason Israel lays claim to Jerusalem is because it views it as its eternal and undivided capital, not just its “seat of government”. This is how CBC Mideast Bureau Chief Derek Stoffel described Israel’s claim to Jerusalem on CBC Radio’s World Report on December 4.
