On July 5, a well-known anti-Israel activist erected signs along a Toronto sidewalk featuring photographs of local Jewish residents beneath the title “Jewish Zionists of Toronto.”

History offers a sobering lesson. Publicly identifying Jews has rarely occurred in isolation. Across different times and places, compiling lists, displaying names, or singling out Jews has often preceded intimidation, exclusion, and, in the worst cases, violence.
