The Daily Brief – Today’s News And Views About Israel & The Mideast – March 21

  • In the Toronto Sun, Candice Malcolm says Canada needs to stand with brave Iranian activists: “This Nowruz, let us be hopeful that brave Iranian activists will once again stand up to the mullahs. Let us commit that if they do, we will stand with them in the name of those killed by the regime, including many Canadians.”
  • If Islamic militants in Gaza or Lebanon go to war with Israel, they could find their usual targets empty.Israel is drawing up contingency plans to evacuate up to a quarter-million civilians from border communities to protect them from attacks from Hamas, Hezbollah or other Islamic militant groups. CTV has coverage.
  • At IPolitics: Former Harper spokesman Jason MacDonald settled a defamation lawsuit with the National Council of Canadian Muslims after they sued MacDonald for his suggestion that the group had links to Hamas.
  • A blogger at Huffington Post Canada implicitly accuses Israel of committing war crimes in Gaza. Yves Engler claims: “Israel of committing war crimes in Gaza, when it killed 2,200 mostly civilians in the summer of 2014.” Contrary to Engler, Israel claims that more than half of the fatalities were combatants engaged in warfare against Israel. That’s a 1:1 ratio of combatants vs. civilian casualties which is almost unheard of in modern warfare. Curiously, Mr. Engler fails to condemn Hamas for its double war crimes: Hiding behind civilians while firing on civilians.
  • At Metro News (via AP): Israel’s Shin Bet security agency said Tuesday that it had arrested a Palestinian employee of a humanitarian program run by the Turkish government on suspicion of diverting funds to militants.
  • AP reports that: “The Islamic militant group Hamas has drafted a new political program it hopes will improve ties with neighbouring Egypt and the West, and present a more moderate image that will help it get off Western terrorism lists.” In truth, Hamas has not renounced genocide against Jews and still calls for Israel’s destruction. Hamas is a radical Islamist terrorist organization that represses free speech, imposes sharia law, hangs gays and dissidents, is corrupt, incites its populace, etc. etc.
  • The young Palestinian women don baseball caps on top of their Islamic headscarves and field tennis balls with fabric gloves, giving a decidedly local feel to the great American pastime. CTV has coverage.
