Success! HRC Prompts Globe Correction: Edan Alexander Last Known Living American Hostage Held By Hamas

On May 13, Globe and Mail reporter Eric Reguly filed a report which erroneously claimed that Edan Alexander is the “last known American hostage” not the “last known (living) American hostage” who was held by Hamas in Gaza and who was recently released.

Reguly erroneously stated the following:

“On Monday, Hamas announced that the last known American hostage, Edan Alexander, 21, who was serving in the Israeli infantry when he was captured during the Oct. 7 attacks, would be released.”

An accurate shorthand would have been for the Globe to say that Edan Alexander is the last known * living * American hostage being held by Hamas in Gaza, but it’s important to stress that 4 other US-Israeli hostages (all presumed dead) are still being held by Hamas. They are: Itay Chen, Gadi Haggai, Omer Neutra and Judi Weinstein Haggai, a Canadian-Israeli-American citizen.

After HRC alerted the Globe and Mail of this error, corrective action was commendably undertaken to set the record straight.
