An August 6 Reuters news article published to the Globe and Mail website detailed how the Muslim Brotherhood blamed Israeli intelligence officials for having direct involvement in the Sinai terror attack that saw 16 Egyptian soldiers killed in an attack carried out by 35 gunmen who stormed the Gaza/Egypt border. The Globe’s headline and URL blared: “Israeli intelligence behind Sinai attack, Egypt’s Brotherhood says”
Given this serious and outrageous accusation made by the Muslim Brotherhood, in the interests of balance and fairness, the Globe and Mail should have featured a quote or context from Israeli sources who have gone on record denying these charges. Indeed, the BBC at the time had reported that Israel’s foreign ministry had dismissed the allegation as "nonsense" with Israeli Foreign Ministry spokesman Yigal Palmor saying: “Even the person who says this when he looks at himself in the mirror does not believe the nonsense he is uttering."
Considering that this Globe article had already received a great readership at the time that HonestReporting Canada editors flagged the article with over 400 reader comments appended to the article and given that this report would remain on the Globe and Mail’s website in perpetuity, we contacted Globe editors asking that this article be amended to account for Israel’s denial of responsibility for this incident.
We are pleased to report that the Globe and Mail reissued this article per our request including the context that we had desired. Importantly, the new headline of this article reflects Israel’s denial of responsibility for having anything to do with this attack and the article also quotes an Israeli spokesperson who rebutted this allegation.
