Success! Globe And Mail Reporter Deletes Social Media Post Which Called Convicted Palestinian Murderer “Most Famous Palestinian Political Prisoner”

May 3, 2024

On May 3, Globe and Mail Reporter Mark MacKinnon posted a message on X to his 103,700 followers, promoting his latest article entitled: “Marwan Barghouti is at the top of Hamas’s prisoner release list in proposed truce with Israel, brother says,” in which MacKinnon interviewed the brother of convicted murderer Marwan Barghouti, who is currently serving five life sentences for ordering terror attacks (including suicide bombings) which saw the murder of four Israelis and a Greek monk.

According to Barghouti’s brother, Hamas has Marwan at the top of their list of Palestinians they want to be released as part of a potential ceasefire deal with Israel.

In his post on X, Mark MacKinnon called Marwan Barghouti the “most famous Palestinian political prisoner”.

HRC challenged MacKinnon’s statement on X, pointing out that Barghouti’s political views have nothing to do with why he is in prison; Marwan Barghouti is in an Israeli jail because he is a terrorist who was complicit in terrorism, plain and simple.

After pointing this out, the Globe’s reporter updated his original post on X, and deleted the word ‘political’ from his message.

We thank Mark MacKinnon for acknowledging this error and for immediately rectifying it.
