On July 23, Global News aired a segment titled “Vancouver woman pleads for Canada to help family escape Gaza,” which erroneously claimed that “Famine has been declared in the Gaza Strip.”
Watch the full segment below:
This assertion is without foundation as no international authority has officially declared a famine in Gaza and notably, the statement broadcasted was not attributed to any credible source, but was framed as a verified fact.

Israel firmly disputes these famine allegations. As reported in the Times of Israel, The Coordinator of Government Activities in the Territories (COGAT) say that approximately 950 trucks worth of aid are currently positioned on the Gaza side of the border, awaiting distribution — but are delayed by what the agency attributes to a UN bottleneck and logistical failures by various aid agencies to distribute aid to needs Palestinians.
Israel also maintains that it has not identified cases of starvation, alleging instead that Hamas is stealing aid and exploiting the humanitarian crisis to increase pressure in the ongoing hostage negotiations.
After lodging an official complaint with Global News, we are pleased to report that the video report was pulled from the Global News website, ensuring that Canadians are no longer mislead and misinformed.
