On September 11, HonestReporting Canada filed a complaint with CBC News editors after our public broadcaster had published a Reuters report which featured a headline claiming outright that: “Israeli airstrikes kill at least 16 in western Syria”.
Meanwhile, the lead paragraph stated that: “Israeli airstrikes killed 16 people in western Syria and wounded dozens more overnight, Syrian state media reported on Monday, the deadliest Israeli attack reported by Syrian authorities since the Iranian embassy compound in Damascus was hit in April.”
As we told CBC News, it’s very important to stress that claims of the 16 dead in Syria are all just that, claims made by Syrian state-run and funded media, the veracity of which has not been confirmed to date.
As such, it’s imperative that this headline be featured in attribution and we called for CBC to correct its headline to make this clear.
Subsequent to our complaint, we are pleased to note that on September 12, CBC News amended its headline to the following: “Israeli strikes on Syria kill at least 16 people, Syrian state media say.”
Here’s a before and after comparison:
We thank CBC News for taking corrective action and for its cooperation.
