Success! After HRC Complaint, CBC Amends Article Adding Critical Context About Hezbollah Rocket Attacks

October 9, 2024

On October 2, HonestReporting Canada filed a complaint with CBC News editors about a report published that day entitled: “Lebanese Nova Scotians fear for family back home as violence escalates”.

The article, by CBC journalist Celina Aalders, ignored why Israel has been engaged in conflict with Hezbollah, a terror proxy of the Iranian regime, which is due to the terrorist group’s firing 9,500 rockets at Israeli civilians since Hamas’s October 7 massacres, causing 70,000+ civilians to be displaced from their homes in northern Israel, as well as attacks which maimed and murdered dozens of Israelis, including 12 Druze children.

Instead, CBC readers were only told that: “Israel launched a ground invasion on Tuesday, sending its troops into southern Lebanon targeting Hezbollah. The Iranian-backed militant group confirmed its fighters were engaging with Israeli forces inside Lebanon on Wednesday. The invasion follows Israel’s several attacks against Lebanon, including a deadly detonation of booby-trapped Hezbollah pagers and two weeks of repeated airstrikes. An airstrike on Friday in Beirut killed Hezbollah’s leader, Hassan Nasrallah, along with many civilians.”

Untold to CBC’s readership, on October 8, the day after Hamas’ genocidal massacres of 1,200 Israelis and hostage-taking of 250, the Iranian proxy initiated hostilities with the Jewish state – in solidarity with Hamas – by firing deadly rockets at Israeli cities in the north.

This context was vital for Canadians to understand who instigated the hostilities and why the conflict has escalated.

The sub-headline of this report also stated as fact that: “Nearly 1,900 people have been killed in Lebanon since Oct. 7, 2023”. In truth, this information was a mere claim made by Lebanese authorities and has not been substantiated.

Subsequent to our complaint, we are pleased to report that CBC updated its article by adding a new paragraph, which now states: “Israel launched a ground invasion on Tuesday, sending its troops into southern Lebanon targeting Hezbollah, the Iran-backed militant group. Thousands of Israelis have been displaced from their homes in northern Israel due to Hezbollah rocket attacks over the border from Lebanon over the past year.”

CBC also amended the sub-headline to this article which now reads: “’It’s the unknown of what tomorrow, or even the next half hour, will hold’”, and added this clarification notice to its article:

Clarifications

  • This article has been updated to more precisely describe the number of people reported killed or injured in Lebanon in the past two weeks and to add additional context about Israel’s recent military operations.
