So-Called “Humanitarian” Group Norwegian Refugee Council (NRC), A Darling Of CBC News, Received Millions In Taxpayer Handouts In 2025, Despite Alleged Connections To Palestinian Terrorism

Canadian taxpayers continue to unwittingly donate millions of dollars to a so-called “humanitarian” group with alleged ties to Palestinian terrorists, and the Canadian news media continues to provide it with sympathetic and uncritical coverage at the same time.

Over a two-year period from October 2023 to August 2025, the Canadian government (and thus the Canadian taxpayer) donated more than $355 million (CAD) for supposed “humanitarian assistance” to Palestinians in the Gaza Strip and Judea & Samaria (West Bank).

One of the recipients of that largesse was Norwegian Refugee Council (NRC), a group claiming to “provide emergency assistance and protect people’s rights in the world’s most challenging crises,” and which received three million dollars in handouts in 2025 alone by Canada, with millions of dollars in other donations in previous years, as noted by commentator Andy Lee.

Despite the group’s lofty promises of conducting humanitarian work in dangerous locales, a recent report found that the organization continues to have deep ties to Palestinian terrorists inside Gaza.

In December, 2025, NGO Monitor documented that NRC’s Gazan administrative director, playing a senior role in the group’s activities in the territory, is “employed by the (Hamas-run) government of Gaza,” and has also achieved “the rank of Naqib,” which it notes is equivalent to captain.

That closeness may explain why, according to the report, when they were “confronted with complaints from civilians (in Gaza) regarding terror infrastructure in residential areas, they did not follow up.” Given Hamas’ widespread and deep presence within Gaza civil society – to say nothing of its total control over the governance of areas under its control – the terrorist group has a significant grip over what takes place.

For its part, CBC, Canada’s taxpayer-funded broadcaster, has also devoted extensive time to interviewing and normalizing the group’s representatives, consistently without challenge or pushback, and thus acting as little more than an unpaid publicist.

In interviews broadcast throughout 2025, CBC gave an entirely uncritical opportunity for NRC staffers to hysterically claim there was almost no food in Gaza, that there was about to be a “total collapse of civil order,” and that Jerusalem was conducting a “war on children,” ignoring Hamas’ theft of humanitarian aid, and calling Palestinian terrorists “civil servants.”

The Norwegian Refugee Council is hardly alone in getting such a white-glove treatment from CBC. Other taxpayer-funded groups boasting enormous budgets as well as charitable tax status in Canada, such as UNRWA, UNICEF, Save the Children, Care Canada, and Oxfam Canada (and Oxfam Quebec), have also been given consistently fawning interview platforms from Canada’s public broadcaster.

Beyond reporting the news, one of the most critical roles for a news media outlet – particularly a publicly-funded one – is to hold the powerful to account, and by consistently and shamelessly failing to press so-called “humanitarian” agencies like the Norwegian Refugee Council (NRC) about their alleged connections to Palestinian terrorism, the Canadian news media has failed spectacularly.
