PostMedia Newswire Incorrectly Draws Link Between Israeli Settlements and Palestinian Refugees

January 21, 2014

A PostMedia Newswire by Jessica Barrett published on January 20 in the Calgary Herald, Montreal Gazette, National Post, Ottawa Citizen and Regina Leader-Post saw this reporter incorrectly state the following:

“Immigration Minister Chris Alexander said Sunday Canada will not get involved in resettling Palestinian refugees displaced by expansion of controversial Israeli settlements.”

This statement wrongly implied that refugees are being created today due to Israeli settlements. Rather, the refugee issue stems from a war of annihilation waged against Israel by Palestinians and Arab armies beginning in 1948 and before, and having nothing whatsoever to do with building Jewish homes in disputed territories.  Thousands of Arabs left in anticipation of a war, thousands more responded to Arab leaders’ calls to get out of the way of the advancing armies, and most simply fled to other Arab countries to avoid being caught in the cross fire of a battle (the number of Jews fleeing Arab countries following Israel’s independence in 1948 was nearly double the number of Arabs who left Israel).

HRC contacted PostMedia which promptly issued corrections in the respective outlets. See corrections below that were published today:
