Le Devoir Commentator Says No “Sane Person” Could Defend Israel’s Counter-Terrorism Operations Against Hamas

Harper’s Magazine is a storied American publication which claims to offer “a unique perspective on politics, society, the environment, and culture.”

If so, the magazine’s president and publisher, John R. MacArthur would do well to keep those standards in mind when he is writing columns in other publications. His March 3 commentary which was published in Le Devoir entitled: “Israel as the 51st state,” offered a perspective that is neither unique nor thoughtful, neither informed nor even coherent.

In the column, MacArthur criticized the Trump peace proposal for Gaza, mocking it as “sheer madness,” failing to offer any insight as to why the plan was proposed at all, nor offering any alternative.

Gaza, under the leadership of the democratically elected terrorist group Hamas, has become a terrorist statelet weaponized against Israel. Hamas, as thoroughly entrenched in Gaza as it is, is committed to Israel’s destruction and will never voluntarily relinquish control, nor its weapons.

Regardless of the merits (or not) of the Trump proposal, it seeks to address an unavoidable problem: that Palestinian terrorism is widely popular in Gaza, and until there is a fundamental shift in Palestinian society away from trying to destroy Israel, death and ruin is all but an inevitability.

There is nothing Israel can do to make Palestinian terrorist groups accept laying down their weapons. The only alternative, then, is for Hamas, or its allies, to launch a war against Israel every few years, for the foreseeable future.

It should be no surprise that MacArthur offered no alternative to the Trump proposal, since he appeared unwilling to even recognize what the problem is in the first place, given that he failed to mention Hamas anywhere in his column, as if the terrorist group that launched the war and controls Gaza with an iron fist is so irrelevant as to be ignored.

MacArthur did acknowledge the “horrific attacks of October 7,” but failed to tell readers who exactly the culprit behind the massacres was, and only mentioning them in the context of claiming that “no sane person can see the massacre in Gaza – where the often indiscriminate mutilation and killing of children is rife – as a proportionate response” to the October 7, 2023 attacks.

There are, in fact, many “sane” people who do see exactly that, and MacArthur has done himself no favours by apparently pretending they do not exist and consequently ignoring their reports. These individuals include experts in urban warfare and combat, who know first-hand that Israel has not committed any “massacre” in Gaza, nor has it carried out “indiscriminate mutilation” in the coastal enclave, and in fact, has taken extraordinary measures to minimize civilian casualties.

The worst sin of MacArthur’s column was not merely his failure to mention Hamas by name, but his inability to recognize the cause of the conflict at all. Polls taken after October 7, 2023 showed that large numbers of Palestinians supported the rape, torture, murder, mutilation and kidnapping of Israeli civilians. A society which tolerates, and celebrates, the murder of Israelis is one which shows the world – but not MacArthur, apparently – that peace is not possible until the Palestinians are deradicalized and taught that the path to statehood will not come through the murder of innocent Israelis.
