La Presse Reports On Potential Arms Sales To Israel With Ammunition Manufactured In Quebec; Exclusively Quotes Anti-Israel Voices For Comment

In the latest example of anti-Israel, agenda-driven reporting, an August 15 article in La Presse entitled: “Ammunition made by a Quebec company could be sent to Israel,” written by reporter Melanie Marquis, conveyed complaints by pro-Palestinian activists that weaponry used by Israel in its counter-terrorism operations against Hamas could be developed by a company based in Quebec.

The background of the story is not, on its face, problematic: as of early January, the Trudeau government has reportedly paused non-lethal military exports to Israel, but a recent US government memo shared that a Quebec company would be developing ammunition if the US Congress approved the contract. However, Marquis’ report exclusively interviewed anti-Israel voices who spoke with a single, radical voice, erasing any opposing views entirely from mention.

Only Anti-Israel Detractors Quoted

One individual quoted is Michael Bueckert of Canadians for Justice and Peace in the Middle East (CJPME), an organization which counts among its “local organizers” an individual calling for genocide against Jews and whose past board members have played interference for Hamas by claiming that the terrorist organization does not target Israeli civilians. The group has also been criticized for calling Hamas a “resistance organization,” and not – what it is – a demonic and bloodthirsty terrorist group, and for endorsing the 1-state solution, AKA Israel’s destruction via the so-called “right of return” demographic ticking bomb.

Predictably, Bueckert trotted out the false and deceptive claim that Israel is “actively committing genocide,” an allegation so thoroughly baseless it would make a conspiracy theorist blush.

While fraudulent propaganda uttered by interviewees is not the fault of La Presse, mindlessly regurgitating such disinformation is not journalism, but stenography. If an interviewee was quoted making racist, sexist or homophobic comments, without any evidence whatsoever and based entirely on a radical ideological bent, it is inconceivable that a Canadian newspaper should platform them, not only while providing no alternative views, but without even a scintilla of context for readers.

The article quoted another interviewee, Rachel Small of World Beyond War, who said the news “destroys any trust we have left for the government.”

And yet again, Marquis quoted Alexandre Boulerice, an NDP Member of Parliament who has previously spread anti-Israel conspiracy theories, for his comment that “no Canadian weapons should be transferred to the Netanyahu regime that commits serious violations of human rights, international law, and the right of war.”

Israel Conducting Moral & Just War In Self Defense

Not a single Canadian was quoted who could offer an opposing view, namely that Israel is conducting a legally and morally justified war against a genocidal Islamic terrorist organization that brazenly seeks the violent destruction of Israel, and that Jerusalem has taken more pains to minimize civilian casualties than virtually any other military in the history of modern warfare.

As a result, many would argue, Canada is not only entitled to, but perhaps duty-bound to help support a democratic ally, Israel, as it fights an existential fight against a totalitarian and fanatical web of Islamic terrorist organizations, including both Hamas and Hezbollah, both funded, trained and armed by the Islamic Republic of Iran, which has long called for Israel’s extermination. However, those views were completely omitted from Melanie Marquis’ article, which instead preferred to give a platform only to the most radical anti-Israel voices in Canadian society, and whose views – if implemented – would prevent Israel from defending itself against genocidal terrorist groups which have raped, tortured, murdered and kidnapped scores of innocent civilians.
