La Presse’s international affairs columnist Laura-Julie Perreault is nothing if not consistent. Nearly three years ago, she penned an opinion column which uncritically regurgitated allegations from Amnesty International, a widely-panned anti-Israel activist organization, treating them as gospel truth and disregarding any apparent interest in critical analysis.
And now she’s done it again. On December 6, she penned another column entitled: “Joe Biden in the Dock,” musing as to whether the International Criminal Court (ICC) should issue an arrest warrant for US President Joe Biden for his support of Israel against Hamas, citing as key evidence Amnesty International’s latest report accusing Israel of various crimes.
Perreault wrote that the question of Biden’s complicity in alleged crimes has become “all the more relevant” since Amnesty International accused Israel of “genocide” in a recent report. However, Amnesty International’s report is irrelevant. It is a stridently anti-Israel organization, radical in its views, and its report’s findings were a foregone conclusion almost from the get-go.
La Presse Commentator A Stenographer For Anti-Israel Group
Acting as a stenographer for the controversial group, Perreault wrote that “the international human rights organization points out in particular that the State of Israel has carried out indiscriminate attacks ‘designed to cause a large number of deaths among the civilian population, as demonstrated by Israel’s use of explosive weapons with a wide impact radius.’”
It appears neither Amnesty International nor Perreault know the meaning of the word indiscriminate. It means at random, and without any judgment at all. By literally no standard can this term be applied to Israel’s counter-terrorism efforts in Gaza, which have achieved a lower civilian death toll than in virtually any other modern armed conflict.
As evidence for their claim, the group points to Israel’s use of powerful explosives in Gaza, but this is a red herring. Hamas, the genocidal terrorist organization which began the war with Israel 14 months ago with its massacre of civilians, developed a huge network of subterranean tunnels, where it has stored weapons and hid their fighters. In some of the tunnels, hostages the group kidnapped nearly 14 months earlier – and ignored in Perreault’s column – may also be held.
These tunnels, built with stolen humanitarian aid, are deep underground, just like the fortified sub-terranean compound where Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah was in when he was killed in September.
Consequently, powerful explosives are required to penetrate Hamas’ terror tunnels and kill their leaders, a rather obvious point that somehow was lost on Perreault.
The Great Lengths Israel Takes To Protect Civilian Life
She also wholly ignored the extensive efforts made by Israel to minimize civilian casualties in Gaza, including actively warning civilians and evacuating them from areas of heavy fighting.
But for Perreault, these central details are apparently not worth mentioning at all, nor is Hamas, which gets only a singular passing mention in her column, helping to present the false picture of Israel attacking civilians in Gaza in the seeming absence of the terrorist group.
Perreault expressed surprise that Biden supported Israel’s efforts to defend itself, in spite of “orders from the International Court of Justice to prevent genocide, ICC arrest warrants, multiple UN reports of an unprecedented humanitarian crisis in Gaza, repeated appeals from aid organizations on the ground, and protests on campuses in the United States…”
This litany of supposed evidence is a distraction. There is nothing in the International Court of Justice (ICJ) judgment which accuses Israel of genocide, and the tiny number of malcontents on campuses in the United States do not change the reality on the ground, either, despite their loud protestations.
Being a columnist means more than just offering comment; it should also include providing thoughtful insight and critical thinking. Regrettably, Perreault offered neither in her December 6 commentary.
