“There’s daggers in men’s smiles…” Shakespeare uses these words in Macbeth, but they could be rewritten for the current, deadly conflict in Gaza, as: “There’s terrorists in press shirts”.

Le Journal de Montreal, a French language newspaper with the largest circulation in Quebec, published an AFP article on July 31 entitled: “Two journalists killed in Israeli bombing in Gaza,” which reported that “Al Jazeera Arabic journalist Ismail al-Ghoul and his cameraman Rami al-Refee were killed in an Israeli attack on the Gaza Strip.”

Israel Safeguards International Journalists

This description makes it sound like Israel is engaged in wanton attacks on virtuous professionals who are disseminating important information to the public.

Except, nothing could be further from the truth. Israel has clearly stated that al-Ghoul was a Hamas terrorist who took part in the October 7 massacre. On August 1, the IDF issued a press release saying that in an operation, the Israeli Air Force “struck and eliminated Ismail al-Ghoul, a Hamas Military Wing operative and Nukhba terrorist who participated in the October 7th Massacre. He also worked as a journalist for the Al Jazeera channel for the past few months.”

Nukhba is a branch of Hamas which carried out mass murders in Israel on the seventh of October.

The IDF even included a Hamas document demonstrating that al-Ghoul had been a member of Hamas since 2021. Additionally, it shared that he had “instructed other operatives on how to record operations and was actively involved in recording and publicizing attacks against IDF troops. His activities in the field were a vital part of Hamas’ military activity.”

However, AFP and Le Journal de Montreal neglected to disclose this to their readers regarding any of this critical information and context. The article did not even mention Israel’s statement that he was a Hamas terrorist as an alternate view.

Al-Ghoul Was A Hamas Terrorist

In omitting this information, both news outlets effectively erased the events al-Ghoul participated in on October 7 when Hamas terrorists – led by their Nukhba division of whom al-Ghoul was a member – invaded Israel and burned, beheaded, gang-raped, and murdered 1,200 innocent men, women, and children, often while still in their beds. They recorded it, quite likely with al-Ghoul’s help, often celebrating their bestial behavior. They also took 252 hostages, of whom 115 are still being held.

By making no attempt whatsoever to include this fundamental point, Le Journal de Montreal has effectively whitewashed the crimes Hamas terrorist al-Ghoul committed on October 7.

Al-Ghoul was hardly alone in being both a Hamas terrorist and a member of the press, at least officially. A number of journalists in Gaza have affiliations with Hamas and Islamic Jihad. In fact, in April, Israeli hostages were rescued from the home of another “journalist” – Abdallah Aljamal – who was a Hamas operative, guilty of guarding three Israelis who were kidnapped from their homes on October 7. Likewise Al-Jazeera is interlinked with Hamas terrorism, as a Tel Aviv District Court found in June and is now banned in Israel.

Le Journal de Montreal’s July 31 news article wrongly depicted Israeli forces as having killed an innocent Palestinian journalist, whereas Israel claims the individual in question was a Hamas terrorist who took part in the largest massacre of Jews since the Holocaust.
