Global News promises viewers that their “primary directive is to report accurate, balanced, timely and comprehensive news” to the Canadian public, but a recent segment by the broadcaster made a mockery of that solemn oath.
In a February 25 clip on the Global National program, host Dawna Friesen told viewers that the work of journalists “is increasingly risky,” before citing a claim from the New York-based group Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ), saying that in 2025, “66 percent of those (journalists) who died were killed by Israeli forces, most of them Palestinians reporting in Gaza,” and that it was “the deadliest year for press killings.”

Over the last two and a half years, a litany of anti-Israel groups have leveled accusations against Jerusalem, which have been sympathetically platformed by many news media outlets. Meanwhile, when scholars conduct reports that challenge the dominant Palestinian narrative, including Hamas manipulation of casualty data, they are roundly ignored.
And while it is true that CPJ has made those claims mentioned by Friesen, she treated them as if they were de facto credible, by offering no acknowledgement about how these allegations cannot stand up to even the most basic of scrutiny.
Time and again, observers have noted that a press vest does not equal being a journalist, nor does working as a reporter preclude anyone from being a member of a Palestinian terrorist group, or a combatant in war.
Rather than simply regurgitating CPJ’s claims, other journalists have investigated the allegations by CPJ, and found them to be seriously flawed.
Investigative journalist David Collier found that of the 107 individuals labeled as “journalists” by CPJ at the time, and that half were publicly affiliated with groups like Hamas or Palestinian Islamic Jihad. Then in late 2025, the Meir Amit Intelligence and Terrorism Information Centre corroborated this research, finding that the majority of these so-called “journalists” (around 60 percent) were affiliated with a Palestinian terrorist organization.
One of the “journalists” listed by CPJ is Mahdi Hassan Mohammed al-Mamlouk, who worked as a broadcast engineer for al-Quds al-Youm TV. Simultaneously, he worked as the deputy head of Palestinian Islamic Jihad’s central communications unit.
For reasons that only Global News can explain, CPJ’s claims against Israel are valid enough to share without any context or balance, even as they have been consistently challenged using documented research.
In addition to being abounding in Palestinian terrorists cosplaying as journalists, Gaza is also replete with staffers of so-called “humanitarian” organizations who are moonlighting as terrorists.
One such man was Fadi Al-Waddiya, an employee of Doctors Without Borders (MSF), and the group proclaimed him to be innocent, simply a “medic, a physiotherapist, and a father of three children.”
Al-Waddiya was indeed an employee of MSF, but he was also the deputy head of Palestinian Islamic Jihad’s manufacturing unit. MSF condemned the strike as being “unacceptable,” and that “there is no justification” for having targeted him. Embarrassingly for MSF, in February, the terrorist group publicly acknowledged him as having been a senior operative.
Other senior operatives who also held civilian jobs at the same time were “Gaza Health Ministry” employee and commander of the group’s northern brigade Waseem Yahya Abdulqader al-Ustaz, and nurse and deputy commander of the group’s Military Manufacturing Unit Alaa Hassan Abdullah Asbihi. Global News cannot simply mindlessly repeat claims that have been roundly debunked, without even bothering to admit that those allegations are widely disputed at the very least. Dawna Friesen’s February 25 statement was so devoid of any context that it served only to grossly mislead viewers, and is a virtually identical carbon copy to comments she has made previously.
