For the second year in a row, CBC has permitted anti-Israel extremists to promote their hateful messages on Canada’s publicly-funded broadcaster during New Year’s Eve programming.
Last year, on the evening of December 31, 2024, as CBC personalities and guests rang in the new year, anti-Israel extremists behind them held signs bearing messages such as “Zionism is terrorism” and “Zionism & Nazism are supremacist cults.”
Zionism is the Jewish People’s movement of self-determination in their historic homeland, and by characterizing it as “terrorism” or akin to Nazism, these messages were not simply anti-Israel, but stridently anti-Jewish.
Despite these signs being shown for extended periods of time, there is no evidence that CBC sought to block or remove them from view.
Following that year’s broadcast, HonestReporting Canada publicly condemned the broadcaster for failing to act, and noting that “while CBC did not create the hateful anti-Jewish signs, by appearing to take no action whatsoever to remove them, it is nevertheless complicit in letting those inciting messages be broadcast across Canada.”
But despite the passage of one year, it seems that CBC has made no discernable effort to address its shortcomings of a year later.
The broadcaster’s New Year’s Eve programming on December 31, 2025, was once again marred by anti-Israel demonstrators, who were seen repeatedly waving Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO) flags in an effort to disrupt the proceedings, and hijack the event for their radical cause.
One of the messages displayed stated that Israel’s new year resolution was to “kill more babies,” a vicious and hateful claim towards Jerusalem.
Having permitted such messaging on their platform for two years in a row, CBC therefore cannot claim ignorance, nor can they wash their hands of responsibility.
The public broadcaster enjoys an annual budget of nearly 1.5 billion taxpayer dollars, and it is inconceivable that they would be unable to find an approach that prevents anti-Israel extremists from hijacking unrelated New Year’s Eve programming.
That they failed to do so for two consecutive years indicates either a striking inability to conduct a simple New Year’s Eve program despite their mammoth budget, or otherwise a decision to permit such hateful messages to piggyback off CBC.
By making no discernible effort two years in a row to prevent such content, CBC is sending a clear message to the Canadian taxpayer that it has little interest in upholding journalistic standards.
In fact, over the last two years of the Hamas-Israel war, CBC has repeatedly demonstrated exactly that. Across multiple platforms, including radio, television and print, the public broadcaster has relentlessly promoted anti-Israel agendas with little challenge, interviewed anti-Israel activists in fawning conversations at the exclusion of opposing voices, used anti-Israel activists to report on the Middle East, and whitewashed anti-Israel extremists.
The year 2026 is not off to a good start for CBC.
