Just one day after CTV News host Anne-Marie Mediwake interviewed two radical anti-Israel activists, Dorotea Gucciardo and Mohammad Rizwan Minhas, permitting them to spew unfounded claims, and failed to challenge them even a single time, she was back again at it.
In a January 28 broadcast for the Your Morning program, the focus was “Canadian Companies Doing Business With ICE,” the Immigration and Customs Enforcement organization in the United States.

Her guest, “human rights lawyer” Shane Martinez, wasted no time in using his platform to assail the non-existent “Gaza genocide,” and doing his best to shoehorn Israel into the conversation. He falsely claimed that Canada was “exporting arms to Israel,” a crime he felt was notable given Israel’s allegedly “egregious human rights violations.”
Despite the extraordinary nature of Martinez’s claims, at no time did Mediwake challenge them, nor even remind viewers that his allegations of “genocide” remain unproven and are denied, both by Israel, and by scores of scholars and experts around the world.
Unbeknownst to viewers, Martinez is no mere lawyer; he is a longtime activist with a history of extreme anti-Israel actions.
He is listed as a staff member for the International Centre of Justice for Palestinians (ICJP), a hardline anti-Israel group that has promoted an arms embargo against Israel – effectively seeking to rob it of any ability to defend itself – as well as trying to secure arrest warrants against traveling Israelis.

In the fall of 2023, only one month after Hamas’ genocidal massacres in southern Israel, Martinez signed an open letter which claimed that the terrorist group’s mass killings could be “contextualized,” in what we consider to be a de facto excusal of terrorism.
A CBC News program from October, 2025 featured Martinez, interviewing him as part of his efforts to prevent Jewish charities from donating funds to Israel.
However, viewers were never told of Martinez’s professional involvement with a radical anti-Israel group, nor about his active involvement in anti-Israel efforts. Instead, he was presented simply as a “human rights lawyer.”
Furthermore, despite the extraordinary nature of Martinez’s claims, at no time did Mediwake challenge them, nor even remind viewers that his allegations of “genocide” remain unproven and are denied, both by Israel, and by scores of legal scholars around the world.
By permitting Martinez’s false and dangerous claims about “genocide” stand unchallenged, Mediwake platformed an allegation that is not only without basis in fact, but which has been used as a cudgel to attack Jewish communities around the world.
The fact that Mediwake – on two separate occasions, just one day apart – chose to interview a well-known anti-Israel activist for a softball interview, while failing to provide any semblance of balance whatsoever, raises serious questions about the level of journalistic standards at her program.
If CTV News’ Your Morning program wants to provide serious journalism to the Canadian public, then it must provide balance, rather than just anti-Israel voices, and when they are present, to hold such guests accountable for their claims, rather than simply providing them a sympathetic platform.
