CTV News Hosts Anti-Israel Activist For Two Back-To-Back Interviews Where Guest Spouts Disinformation About Israel – To No Challenge From Host Anne-Marie Mediwake

October 6, 2024

A pair of recent CTV News interviews featured the same guest spewing extremist anti-Israel disinformation, all of which was ignored and allowed to stand unchallenged by the host.

On September 25, Reem Chahrour, an anti-Israel activist who previously participated in an anti-Israel hate mob outside a Toronto-area synagogue, was the guest on CTV News Morning, where she spoke about her experiences leaving Lebanon as a result of the conflict.

However, Chahrour peppered her comments with endless anti-Israel propaganda, including claiming that Jerusalem was carrying out “aggression” against Lebanon purely out of spite.

Referring to Israel’s withdrawal from southern Lebanon in 2000 (from where it had established a buffer zone to stop Hezbollah terrorism), Chahrour stated that “the goal here is land expansion” because Israel wanted to reclaim those territories.

When referring to Hezbollah, a banned terrorist organization, Chahrour used air quotes to refer to “terrorist organizations,” she further claimed that “anyone who has Arab or Lebanese blood, they’re (Israel) going after,” and repeatedly called for an arms embargo against “the entity,” as she called Israel.

Hezbollah Instigated Hostilities On October 8

Not a word was provided by anyone about Hezbollah’s year-long war of aggression against Israel, its status as a banned terrorist group, its firing of rockets deliberately at civilian targets in Israel, or anything else.

In fact, at no time during the six-minute segment did host Anne-Marie Mediwake ever challenge Chahrour’s explicit hateful propaganda, instead allowing it to stand unopposed.

Even as Chahrour sought to sanitize Hezbollah and use blatant lies to defame Israel, she was then invited back to CTV News the very next day to spew her bile.

During that interview, Chahrour made a number of false statements, claims Mediwake not only failed to challenge, but also supported by failing to provide essential context.

Mediwake began the interview by suggesting that Chahrour’s family might be in danger given that Israel had “intensified their strikes on Lebanon.”

This is inaccurate at best. Israel’s leadership has made it clear that they are not targeting Lebanon or Lebanese citizens, but rather, Hezbollah, an Iranian-backed terror organization that has been viciously bombarding Israel with rocket attacks almost daily since October 8, 2023, the day after Hamas’ genocidal massacres in southern Israel.

Encouraged by Mediwake, Chahrour complained that Israeli strikes have been “constant,” and that Israel has always wanted Lebanon to “fail or die.” In fact, as Chahrour stated the previous day, Israel withdrew completely from Lebanon in 2000, leaving the safety of its northern citizens in the hands of U.N. peacekeepers who allowed Hezbollah to grow into the world’s largest terror army, with what the New York Times calls “perhaps the largest arsenal of any [non-government] armed group in the world.”

Hezbollah Uses Lebanese Civilians As Human Shields

Chahrour further suggested that Israel deliberately attacks civilian homes, seemingly without reason. “Rockets cannot blow out of civilian homes and not cause any sort of extensive damage to them,” she claimed. In fact, the IDF has released photos of a long-range missile on a hydraulic system in the attic of an ordinary Lebanese home, footage of rockets exploding out of homes hit by Israeli airstrikes, as well as footage of secondary explosions from munitions caches in civilian homes.

Mediwake utterly failed to mention any of this evidence, nor Israel’s practice of targeting airstrikes based on precise intelligence as to the location of Hezbollah weapons. Chahrour did make one true statement: the IDF has worked hard to avoid harming Lebanese civilians, sending millions of text messages and phone calls warning citizens to leave any home where weapons are being stored.

However, Chahrour twisted this beyond all logic by inviting viewers to imagine themselves receiving a similar message: “What if I told you right now, ‘Leave Toronto?’… And I’m like, ‘Well, this is their home.’”

Mediwake failed to challenge this flawed moral equivalence with a very simple truth: If a Canadian citizen were storing missiles in their garage with the aim of taking innocent Jewish lives and establishing an Iranian-style Shia Islamic state (both stated goals of Hezbollah, according to the Canadian government) we would certainly expect law enforcement and the military to step in to eradicate the threat.

Throughout the interview, Chahrour, who works at The Graph Foundation in Toronto, made her agenda all too clear: demanding that Canada support an arms embargo against Israel. After almost one year of non-stop attacks from Lebanon, after the internal displacement of over 60,000 Israelis from its dangerous northern border, after damage to homes, businesses, and agriculture estimated at over a billion shekels (over C$365M) from rocket fire in northern Israel alone, the Israeli government has finally expanded the goals of the current war against rapacious Iranian proxies including Hamas, Hezbollah, and Houthi extremists to include the safe return of northern citizens to their homes.

This is not only Israel’s right, it is the obligation of any moral government. Iran’s terror proxies have made it clear that when they are finished with Israel, they are coming after other democracies like the U.S. and Canada. By standing up to terror, Israel is fighting a just and necessary war and defending Canadian and Western values.

CTV claims that it “holds itself accountable to… journalistic standards.” But in two back-to-back interviews, Mediwake made no attempt to uphold these standards, and instead gave Chahrour free rein to exploit her Canadian citizenship, which allowed her to safely leave Lebanon, to de facto advocate for Iran and its axis of Islamic terrorism.
