A recent CTV News interview with the head of Doctors without Borders/MSF Canada served as little more than a sympathetic platform to promote the group’s radical anti-Israel talking points and failed to offer any meaningful challenge or context.

The December 30 interview was between host Akshay Tandon and Sana Beg, the executive director of Doctors without Borders Canada. Previously, Beg worked at Al Jazeera, the propaganda outlet owned by the dictatorship of Qatar.

For the duration of the Hamas-Israel war, Doctors without Borders spread vicious anti-Israel propaganda, including expensive advertising buys in The Toronto Star and The Globe & Mail, where it falsely accused Israel of “genocide.”

The interview focused on Israel’s new security requirements for groups operating in Gaza, requiring them to share the list of staff to ensure none are members of Hamas or Palestinian Islamic Jihad (PIJ). While the host mentioned that the groups are challenging “new rules” by Israel, he failed to say a word about what these new rules are, or why they have been put in place.

Instead, the interview was a sympathetic conversation with Beg, who absurdly declared that should Doctors without Borders be banned – a decision that would be entirely their own for refusing to follow security requirements – it would constitute a “death sentence” for Palestinians.

Rather than challenging this hysterical and baseless claim, or asking why the group would willingly take such an action given the consequences for Palestinians, Tandon said nothing at all, allowing it to stand and failing to offer any pushback or even basic facts in response.

In actual fact, Doctors without Borders’ absence would not be a “death sentence,” given that the group is next to irrelevant in Gaza, delivering significantly less than one percent of the total aid coming into the territory, another key point conveniently ignored by the host.

The group is more than simply “humanitarian.” Israel has accused Doctors without Borders of having maintained a “strategic silence” and “failing to acknowledge or condemn” Hamas’ massacres of October 7, 2023, and instead fixating on Israel exclusively. This criticism was similarly ignored by CTV News.

On cue, Beg casually spread the “genocide” libel against Israel, to which the host said nothing, and claimed that the humanitarian aid entering Gaza “continues to be a trickle” when it is an “ocean of needs that is required.”

Given her group’s fanatical anti-Israel antagonism, it is unsurprising that Beg would use her platform to spread anti-Israel propaganda. But it is noteworthy that CTV News failed to tell viewers that hundreds of aid trucks are entering Gaza daily, and that locals there are enjoying restaurants, fully-stocked grocery stores and other consumer luxuries, hardly consistent with the picture drawn by Beg.

Doctors without Borders, much like organizations like Oxfam, Amnesty International, Save the Children and others, has relentlessly spread anti-Israel propaganda, and still been shielded from accountability and criticism by a largely compliant news media, eager to treat them as “humanitarian” in nature.

It’s time that CTV News, and the Canadian news media in general, stop treating groups like Doctors without Borders with kid gloves, and start holding them accountable for their disinformation.
