Yet another Canadian news media outlet is providing highly sympathetic coverage to a group of activists who recently participated in the anti-Israel flotilla to Gaza and returned to Vancouver, where they were met with a loud demonstration inside the city’s airport.

The May 25 broadcast for CityNews Vancouver, “Canadian members of Gaza flotilla return home after being held in Israeli custody,” featured reporter Jack Rabb devote almost 30 seconds to keffiyeh-draped activist Sebastian Tow alleging without evidence that he endured “four days of systematic torture” at the hands of Israeli officials.

Another activist, Michael France, was then shown, claiming that he was beaten and had “30 to 40 different bruises and abrasions,” though none were visible nor shown.

Rather than challenge these serious allegations, Rabb instead pivoted to telling viewers that the recent flotilla to Gaza was aiming to “supply aid to Gaza.” While that may have been its stated goal, one of its key organizers recently admitted that the primary goal was simply as a public relations tool. In fact, Israeli officials say virtually no aid was found on board the flotilla’s boats. Yet these details were not mentioned anywhere in the broadcast.

Israel has also accused flotilla organizers of ties to Palestinian terrorist groups Hamas and the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine (PFLP), towering details that were left out of the broadcast.

Instead, the flotilla publicity stunt was portrayed as a genuine humanitarian effort, with viewers not being given any other details.

Another activist, Grace Mathisen, told the cameras that there are 9,000 Palestinians being kept “hostage” by Israel, a blatant and scandalous falsehood that was presented unchallenged. Israel, unlike Palestinian terrorists, does not keep hostages, but security prisoners. Palestinians imprisoned for committing acts of terrorism are not hostages, but murderous criminals.

The return of flotilla activists to Canada after the flotilla spectacle should have been treated with heavy skepticism on the part of news media outlets like CityNews. Instead, they have been given an overwhelmingly sympathetic platform to allege Israeli abuse without providing evidence, all while their activism has not avoided meaningful scrutiny.

Even in the footage from the CityNews broadcast, taken inside Vancouver International Airport, activists can be seen waving Palestinian flags and wearing keffiyehs, a symbol of anti-Israel activism. This presence raises serious questions about the safety and security of Vancouver’s airport, yet this observation was also nowhere to be seen in Rabb’s report. The normalization of overt demonstrations inside a major Canadian airport deserved at least some journalistic examination and critical questioning from CityNews, rather than no mention at all.

Comments posted to the video report were overwhelmingly negative, with observers mocking what one of them termed “performative virtue signaling.” However, the report featured an almost exclusively one-sided retelling of the flotilla and its participants, making almost no mention of its scandalous activities, leadership, the lack of aid on board or any other pertinent details.

The Canadian news media must start holding flotilla activists accountable for their outlandish claims, rather than providing them with a sympathetic platform to level allegations without evidence against Israel.
