CBC Writer Yasmine Hassan Publishes More One-sided Articles On Hamas-Israel War

November 19, 2024

Over the last 13 months of war, there have been only Palestinian casualties, Palestinian suffering, and Palestinian victims. That message, as utterly detached from reality as it may be, has been the incessant point driven home in multiple news articles by Yasmine Hassan, a producer with CBC News.

Hassan, whose heavily skewed articles have been critiqued by HonestReporting Canada previously, penned a number of more news reports in October, and all of them fall into this category.

One October 13 article entitled: “Death is everywhere in Gaza. That has prompted people of all ages to write their last words for loved ones,” relied on reporting from “freelance videographer Mohamed El Saife,” an anti-Israel propagandist whose work, incredibly, seems to still be sought out by CBC News.

Ignoring How Hamas Is The Author Of Palestinian Suffering

The article profiled Palestinians who, amidst the war between Hamas and Israel, have written last wills and testaments and other messages meant for loved ones. While the thrust of the story is meant to be a human-interest element, Hamas, the Palestinian terrorist organization at the centre of the story, was not mentioned once. This omission is glaring because it portrays the suffering in Gaza in a vacuum, clearly making Israel the culpable party for the war, while ignoring the terrorist group which launched the war on October 7, 2023, and continues to perpetuate it by holding an estimated 101 hostages for well over a year.

An October 24 article entitled: “Palestinian emergency workers pull out of northern Gaza, saying IDF is targeting them,” turned an announcement from the Palestinian Authority (PA) into a full-blown report. Hassan shared that ‘Palestinian Civilian Defence’ recently announced that it would be withdrawing from northern Gaza because their workers have “been targeted by Israeli attacks.”

Not only did Hassan not share that “Palestinian Civilian Defence’ is not an independent agency, but part of the autocratic Palestinian regime based in Judea & Samaria (“West Bank”), context which, if shared with readers, would have helped them understand the nature of the group. Regrettably, Hassan made no such mention.

While Hassan did quote the Israeli military, the overwhelming amount of space was devoted to allegations against Israel from a Palestinian official.

In a third article entitled: “What displacement looks like for Palestinians in Gaza as Israel-Hamas war continues,” published October 31, Hassan reported on the displacement of Palestinians inside Gaza over the last 13 months of war between Hamas and Israel.

Hassan Ignores Israeli Suffering

While such a story may be entirely valid to share with readers, this article – like the others – made no attempt to provide anything beyond an incredibly narrow perspective. In the article, Hassan reported that those living inside Gaza have undergone a number of internal displacements since the Hamas massacres on October 7, 2023, and did quote the Israeli military as saying that they are pursuing terrorists inside the coastal enclave.

Yet for an unknown reason, Hassan did not share that thousands of Israelis have also been made refugees inside their own country as a result of Hamas’ terrorism, including those who formerly lived inside the small towns and villages which were targeted by Hamas terrorists, which remain empty.

While not every detail can be shared in any given article, Hassan’s consistent practice throughout many of her articles has been to profile suffering inside Gaza, often while downplaying if not entirely erasing Hamas’ central role and responsibility, and portraying it as if it exists in a vacuum, with Israelis not suffering death, displacement and more as a result of Palestinian terrorism.
