CBC Radio Program Your World Tonight Features Yet Another Segment Attacking Israel’s Aid Deliveries In Gaza

A July 5 episode of the CBC radio program Your World Tonight featured a segment on Israel’s provision of aid in Gaza, by reporter Philip Lee-Shanok.

Listen to the full segment below:

The report opened by commenting that “there’s renewed hope this weekend that a ceasefire between Israel and Hamas could be inching closer.” Interestingly, in a segment about humanitarian provision, he didn’t mention the hostage release that needs to be part of any ceasefire.

Lee-Shanok’s report quoted Ravina Shamdasani, spokesperson for the office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, as saying that “people walk all day to get food, only to be shot at.” Lee-Shanok also stated that “two American aid workers were also injured in a grenade attack on a GHF aid distribution point in Khan Yunis,” though he failed to name the perpetrators.

It was Hamas, not Israel, which targeted the aid workers, though by omitting this critical information, it was tacitly implied that they were injured by Israel, when in fact they were deliberately targeted by Palestinian terrorists.

The aid distribution Shamdasani was referring to is from the Gaza Humanitarian Foundation (GHF).  Lee-Shanok neglected to provide the crucial context that the GHF has been extremely successful in distributing aid, having handed out almost 65 million meals to date, including averaging about two million meals on any given day recently.

As for claims of hundreds of Gazans killed, blamed on Israel, Shanok neglected to mention that Hamas has been using extreme violence to discourage Gazans from receiving aid. The Middle East Media Research Institute (MEMRI) reported that “the Palestinian Authority Al-Hayat Al-Jadida daily accused Hamas of murdering Gaza residents trying to get to the American food aid distribution centers established in the Gaza Strip.” The article specified that Hamas “death squads” are sent to stop Gazans from getting aid. This is the violence in Gaza that goes ignored.

The Israeli military did acknowledge a small number of civilian casualties as a result of the ongoing Hamas-instigated war that continues, but there remains little evidence for hundreds of deaths, as these claims emanate from a small handful of Gazans, including a senior Hamas official.

But Lee-Shanok didn’t share any of this with his listeners. On the contrary, he hosted Budour Hassan from Amnesty International, a radical anti-Israel NGO, according to NGO Monitor. Budour said that the aid,“should be distributed by humanitarian organizations, not by security contractors who are paid for, not by mercenaries.”

What Budour – who was given another sympathetic interview the same day from CBC – from the public is that that arrangement already happened, and the result was that Hamas looted vast quantities of it.

This is not the first time that the CBC program Your World Tonight has unflinchingly produced such one-sided coverage, uncritically sharing anti-Israel disinformation without challenge.

While talking points straight from incompetent aid organizations are given prominent coverage, the pertinent details are cast away and all but ignored for reasons that remain unclear.

Your World Tonight once again aired a biased segment, omitting key facts and misrepresenting events, leaving listeners with a skewed, misleading view of the conflict.
