In the most recent segment on Israel in the CBC radio program As It Happens, host Nil Köksal spoke with guest Mariam Barghouti about Israel’s counter-terrorism operations in the Arab city of Jenin in Judea & Samaria (or in media parlance, the “West Bank”).
In the January 27 episode, Köksal introduced the topic by saying that Israel had recently launched “Operation Iron Wall” in Jenin, without specifying who, or what, the Israeli military was targeting, leaving listeners to simply guess. The extent to which she offered any details was the reference, as part of a question to Barghouti, about “the presence of those militant groups in Jenin,” following CBC practice to avoid calling Palestinian terrorist groups as such.

But listeners did not have to guess, because Barghouti was only too happy to fill in the blanks, telling Köksal that “we’re seeing field executions” in Jenin. Not a word was uttered by Köksal nor Barghouti about how Jenin has been called the “epicenter” of Palestinian terrorism in Judea & Samaria, and how scores of Palestinian terrorists have emerged from there to murder Israeli civilians.
As has become customary for As It Happens (and much of CBC in general), no additional person was spoken to for balance, leaving Barghouti as the sole source of supposed expertise. While Barghouti was introduced to listeners as a “Palestinian writer and researcher,” that hardly presented the full picture. Barghouti has a social media platform that is replete with extreme attacks on Israel. Posts include statements like “we’re being slaughtered by a nation of imported psychopaths,” another which calls terrorists “resistance fighters,” and using her social media platform in general as an amplifier for Hamas propaganda.
Not only was no opposing or even varied voice offered to listeners, Koksal failed to ever challenge Barghouti on any of her outlandish statements about Israeli operations in Jenin, nor did she ever provide any basic background about the nature of Palestinian terrorist groups operating there.
Instead, among her questions was a highly leading query, saying: “Last week, UN security General Antonio Guterres told delegates in Davos at the World Economic Forum, quote, there’s a risk Israel will feel this is the moment to annex the West Bank, unquote. You live in Ramallah. Is that a concern you share?”
Entirely unsurprisingly, Barghouti took the bait, accusing Israel of seeking the “annexation of the West Bank,” a statement that once again remained entirely unchallenged by the program’s host.
Despite Barghouti’s total erasure of Palestinian terrorism in Jenin, the deadly threat posed by Palestinian terrorist groups in that city is potent. Just days before her interview, and as part of its counter-terrorism operations, Israeli forces killed two of the gunmen who killed three Israelis in a shooting attack earlier in January. Those gunmen were certainly not civilians, but combatants and terrorists who murdered three innocent people in a random terror attack.
And while Barghouti – unchallenged by the CBC’s host – presented Israeli troops in Jenin as marauding violent invaders attacking hapless innocent civilians, Israeli soldiers have been killed and wounded fighting Palestinian terrorists in Jenin in recent days, showing that their opponents are not women and children, but battle-hardened Palestinian fighters.
The January 27 episode of As It Happens once again featured one interviewee offering their anti-Israel viewpoint, while the program’s host opted to not challenge them on their repeated allegations.
