Over the last two years, multiple non-governmental organizations (NGOs) like Save the Children, Oxfam, Human Rights Watch and others have presented themselves as unbiased humanitarian groups concerned only with the welfare of the vulnerable, while simultaneously acting as aggressive anti-Israel activist groups, all while getting near-universal sympathetic coverage from news outlets who failed – or refused – to hold them accountable for their frequently baseless claims.

On October 12, CBC News host Marianne Dimain interviewed Steve Crawshaw, formerly of Human Rights Watch, a group with a long history of anti-Israel antagonism.

While Crawshaw began with a brief acknowledgement of Hamas’ war crimes on October 7, 2023, the overwhelming focus of his statements was condemning Israel for what he characterized as its “war crimes and crimes against humanity,” making no distinction between Hamas’ deliberate targeting of innocent civilians in Israel, and Israel’s efforts to minimize civilian casualties in Gaza.

He stated that Israel has employed the “use of starvation,” appearing to be entirely unaware that more than 110,000 trucks filled with humanitarian aid have flowed into Gaza, precisely the actions that a country would not take if it wanted to starve Gaza.

He also stated that a “range of bodies” have “described (the war) as genocide.” While it is true that some groups have made such claims, his careful cherry-picking also ignores the widespread scholarly findings to the contrary, and instead presumably refers to groups run by long-time anti-Israel activists and decidedly un-credible votes.

Dimain did not push back against Crawshaw at any point, beyond a perfunctory statement that “Israel has denied all those claims up until now,” leaving viewers with no understanding of the broader context.

The same day, Dimain conducted virtually the same interview, speaking with Rachel Cummings of Save the Children, a supposedly humanitarian group that has made a name for itself as a vehemently anti-Israel activist organization.

Much of the interview zeroed around Cummings’ claim that “we need to get” to around 600 aid trucks entering Gaza daily, using it as somewhat of a benchmark for the territory’s needs. For much of the two years of war, “humanitarian” groups had loudly complained that hundreds of trucks were needed on a daily basis to serve the population’s humanitarian needs, though there appears to be little evidence that anything remotely close to that figure ever entered the strip.

Instead, much of what Cummings apparently is referring to is not humanitarian aid, but construction materials and other goods, much of which was used by Hamas to construct their enormous system of subterranean terror tunnels, where many of the hostages were thought to have been kept, alongside Hamas leaders, fighters, and weapons.

Cummings has been a regular feature on CBC radio programs, where she has spread the falsehood that Israel has prevented aid into Gaza, and has demonized the American and Israeli-backed aid group, the Gaza Humanitarian Foundation (GHF).

As for Marianne Dimain, in recent weeks she has conducted soft-touch interviews with anti-Israel activists from groups like Doctors without Borders (also known as Médecins Sans Frontières, or MSF), where she elected not to hold their staffer accountable for their baseless accusations against Jerusalem, or Amnesty International, where she conducted the conversation virtually the exact same way.

Time and again, supposedly “humanitarian” groups like Amnesty International, Oxfam, Human Rights Watch, Doctors Without Borders, Save the Children and more have demonized Israel while Canada’s publicly-funded broadcaster has repeatedly failed to push back against these absurd allegations, all while largely ignoring Israeli voices in the process.
