Another group of fringe anti-Israel activists have been given fawning media coverage by Canada’s publicly-funded broadcaster, CBC News.
In a January 6 news article entitled: “Group of Quebec doctors suspends non-essential work Monday to protest bloodshed in Gaza,” journalist Hénia Ould-Hammou reported that a “small group of doctors” in Quebec suspended their non-essential duties for the day, and conducted a silent protest to “honour health-care workers who have been killed in Gaza.”
And by a “small group,” she means miniscule. The photo shows a total of seven people, enough to fit in a minivan, but that didn’t stop CBC News from producing a lengthy article about the protesters and giving them an unfettered platform to spew their disinformation, all on the taxpayer’s dime.
Ould-Hammou began the article by referring to “Israel’s deadly assaults on Gazans and their fragile health-care system,” an incredible example of overt editorialization on the part of a supposed reporter.
Platforming Extremist Anti-Israel Allegations
The article was a mix of platforming outlandish accusations from the anti-Israel activists interspersed with misleading statements about the Hamas-Israel war.
Physician Sophie Zhang was quoted as denying the presence of Hamas terrorists inside Gaza health facilities, claiming that “none of the health-care workers who have been there have ever seen any evidence of this.” Regardless of whether those workers would freely or honestly admit they saw such a thing or not, there can be little doubt about Hamas’ widespread use of Gaza hospitals for its terrorism, though Ould-Hammou does not tell readers this. In fact, just today, Israel released a video of the interrogation of Anas Muhammad Faiz Al-Sharif, a Hamas terrorist apprehended during a precise operational activity in the area of the Kamal Adwan Hospital. In it, the terrorist said the following: “Inside the hospital, they distribute the grenades and mortars equipment for attacking tanks, for ambush positions, and for tunnels underground…” This was just one testimony from the over 240 terrorists that were apprehended.
Ould-Hammou reported that “more than 45,500 Palestinians have been killed in the past 15 months, according to Gaza’s Health Ministry,” seemingly following a directive from CBC Ombudsman Jack Nagler instructing CBC staff to downplay Hamas’ control over the so-called “Gaza Health Ministry.” The reference to 45,500 Palestinians also made no mention of the breakdown of civilians, combatants, or the widespread debunking of these casualty figures.
In fact, the entire article was a blatant whitewash of Hamas in general. Only once did the Palestinian terrorist group receive a passing mention, while the dangerous and irresponsible false claim of “genocide” was repeated five times in the article.
Whitewashing Hamas Terrorism
Multiple individuals interviewed in the article have a checkered anti-Israel past. Since Hamas’ massacres on October 7, 2023, Zhang signed an open letter accusing Israel of genocide but ignoring any mention of Israeli hostages, while Khadijé Jizi, a genetic counselor, signed an open letter which called for the release of Palestinian terrorists from Israeli jails and which denied Israel’s right to exist.
However, none of this information about the doctors’ actions was provided to readers in the CBC News article. If it had, given the extremism exhibited in those letters and signed by medical professionals, more Quebecers could very well be compelled to encourage the signatories to take even longer breaks from the medical profession, rather than providing them medical services.
These medical practitioners, as private citizens, have a right to hold and express these opinions, even when they are based on falsehoods. However, to have CBC News give them uncritical coverage while failing to offer even the most basic context to the public represents just the latest instance of the broadcaster’s failure to uphold journalistic standards.
