Hezbollah, the Lebanese terrorist organization often seen as the largest non-state military actor in the world, and backed by the Islamic Republic of Iran, exerts enormous influence and control across Lebanon, meaning that even to criticize the terrorist group can carry dire consequences.
That lesson was imparted in no uncertain terms to Rafik Hariri, the late reformist prime minister of Lebanon, assassinated by Hezbollah in 2005, in part due to his vocal opposition to the terrorist group.
Consequently, any remarks from any Lebanon-based commentator, operating under the shadow of the world’s most powerful terrorist group, should be seen, at least in part, from that context. That was painfully clear during a September 26 interview on Front Burner, a CBC podcast with a history of interviewing almost exclusively anti-Israel guests for insight on the Middle East.
In the 22-minute segment entitled: “As bombs rain down, Israel readies potential Lebanon invasion,” host Jayme Poisson was joined by Tasnin Chaaban, a reporter for L’Orient Today, a Lebanese English-language newspaper, for her thoughts on the Hezbollah-Israel violence.

It did not take long in the interview for it to become evident that Chaaban is not offering any kind of thoughtful commentary on Hezbollah, but rather a careful whitewashing of the Islamic terrorist group, ensuring that it is framed in the most favourable way possible.
In her introduction, Poisson misrepresented the conflict, telling listeners that “since the start of the war in Gaza, the Lebanese political and paramilitary group Hezbollah has been exchanging cross-border attacks with the Israeli military.” At first glance, that sounds correct, except for one major point: only one day after Hamas’ genocidal massacres in Israel, on October 7, 2023, Hezbollah began firing rockets into Israel in an unprovoked act of aggression, purely out of “solidarity” with its fellow terrorist group. Under any circumstance, that constitutes an open act of war. But for CBC, that is merely “exchanging” fire.
Iran Is The World’s Leading State-Sponsor Of Terrorism
Throughout her comments, Chaaban attempted to frame Hezbollah, and its patron Iran, as reasonable and restrained actors, despite launching an unprovoked war with Israel, and at one point stating that for a year, there have been “rules of engagement within Hezbollah and Israel. And strikes have been more or less tit for tat, with an escalation here, an escalation there. However, as of Monday, areas that we would have never thought would have been targeted, were targeted.”
While it is true that Israel has been extraordinarily restrained in responding to nonstop Hezbollah aggression, in no way does that require any country on the receiving end of an act of war to refrain from defending itself, as Israel has evidently done recently, targeting senior Hezbollah terrorists. But Chaaban’s childish rhetoric and logic was never challenged by the program host.
Worse yet, Chaaban then heaped praise on Hezbollah, the genocidal terrorist group sworn to Israel’s destruction, claiming that “Hezbollah seems to still show restraint within the way they’re responding,” as if launching an unprovoked war, massacring children, sending tens of thousands of civilians from their homes, and firing rockets into civilian areas – all out of solidarity for another genocidal terrorist group – is somehow restrained.
Any country faced with such a bloodthirsty attack would surely seek to defend itself, and not – as Israel has done – wait nearly a year before taking decisive action, but it is Israel, not Hezbollah, portrayed as the villain.
Next in the segment came the conspiracy theories, when Poisson asked about Hezbollah’s widely-documented use of civilian areas for storage of rockets, a point forcefully denied by Chaaban, who claimed that was “utter fiction.”
Hezbollah Uses Lebanese Civilians As Human Shields
Except it’s not. Israel has produced images of munitions being stored in houses by Hezbollah, but this point was predictably hidden by Chaaban, and conveniently ignored totally by Poisson, evidently satisfied to let Chaaban’s disinformation to remain unchallenged. Even if Chaaban would opt to dismiss such images (though on what basis, it is unclear), by pretending that the evidence simply does not exist at all, she is engaging in flat-out propaganda on behalf of Hezbollah.
At no point in the podcast were listeners told that Hezbollah started the war with Israel nearly a year ago, has deliberately targeted (and murdered) civilians in Israel, and whose (now) deceased leader, Hassan Nasrallah, has called for the group to target not just Israel, but indeed all Jews around the world.
Instead, the September 26 episode of CBC’s Front Burner allowed a Lebanese ‘journalist’ to run interference for Hezbollah, all while the program’s host simply allowed it to happen.
