CBC As It Happens Features Another Anti-Israel Guest Accusing Jerusalem Of “Genocide” With No Pushback From Host

August 26, 2024

Another day, another anti-Israel activist platformed on a CBC radio program.

This time, it was the August 22 edition of As It Happens in a segment entitled: “What this doctor would have said about Gaza if she’d spoken on the DNC main stage,” where guest host Susan Bonner was joined by family doctor Tanya Ali Haj-Hassan, who is part of a political organization, The Uncommitted National Movement, which tried to get her a speaking slot on the main stage at the Democratic National Convention in the United States to call for more aggressively anti-Israel policies.

It was just the latest instance of an anti-Israel activist being interviewed on the CBC radio program, when voices supportive of Israel were nowhere to be seen.

During the interview, Bonner spoke with Haj-Hassan about her views on the Hamas-Israel war, and what she would have wanted to say to the assembled crowds.

Haj-Hassan made allegations that Israel’s counter-terrorism operations against Hamas were “targeting and destroying life and everything needed to sustain it.”

While such words may have been no doubt rhetorically powerful on a stage, they are hyperbolic to the point of being utterly absurd.

Israel is indeed targeting some in Gaza, but they are Hamas or Islamic Jihad operatives, Hamas military installations, and others directly involved with the Islamic terrorist group, and despite the organization’s proven use of its own people as human shields, Israel has taken extraordinary – even unprecedented – efforts to minimize civilian casualties, at a high cost for its own soldiers.

Haj-Hassan’s Comments A Blood Libel Against Israel

As for Haj-Hassan’s ridiculous statement that Jerusalem is targeting “everything needed to sustain” life, such propaganda would be scandalous from an ignoramus, but for a doctor who was in Gaza, her statements amount to a blood libel against Israel.

Every single day, hundreds of aid trucks enter Gaza, bearing food, medicine and other humanitarian essentials. In fact, there are more food trucks coming into the territory daily than were coming in before Hamas’ massacres of October 7. But those facts apparently run contrary to Haj-Hassan’s worldview, and thus needed to be excised.

Despite Haj-Hassan’s repeated asinine comments, at no point did Bonner push back on her guest to make sure that listeners could be well-informed. Instead, they remained unchallenged.

Throughout the discussion, Haj-Hassan made comments that were meant to shock, but otherwise had little relationship to reality, including her comment that “every month, thousands more children (are) killed.” Perhaps she should have consulted the United Nations, hardly a bastion of pro-Israel views, which recently halved its own (highly suspect) estimates of casualties in Gaza, which do not support anything remotely close to “thousands” of children killed monthly. It is a total fiction, and it went unchallenged by Bonner.

No Genocide In Gaza

Haj-Hassan, showing a total contempt for facts, accused Israel of “genocide” and said that its operations against a bona fide genocidal terrorist group, Hamas, “relies on the dehumanization of Palestinians.”

While it may be tempting to disregard such comments as the ravings of an anti-Israel extremist, they are indeed dangerous, because they are a wholesale assault on the truth, and moreover, seek to demonize Israel and remove it’s very right to combat a terrorist organization that is proudly genocidal and which seeks the total destruction of Israel through violence. This helps to explain why Haj-Hassan also is calling for an arms embargo on Israel, which would deny it the means by which to repel a terrorist onslaught that could lead to the genocide of the Jewish people.

Claims of genocide in Gaza are not a political opinion, or even a legitimate viewpoint. It is a conspiracy theory totally devoid of any factual basis, aimed entirely at attacking Israel. And when a guest like Haj-Hassan, who claims to have credibility, makes such an indefensible allegation, she should have been aggressively challenged, not allowed to spew her bile on CBC, as it hosts yet another guest speaker demonizing Israel.
