The Vancouver Sun is reporting that "An organization describing itself as the Palestine Media Collective says it distributed 12,000 fake editions of The Vancouver Sun on Thursday to protest what it described as the paper’s "anti-Palestinian bias."
Kevin Bent, publisher of The Sun, said the paper is upset the group took "advantage of our brand" and would be investigating what, if any, legal steps could be taken against the group.
?Earl Zatz Handel, a representative of the group, said in an interview it distributed the four-page fake edition of the paper — featuring made-up articles and ads — at transit hubs in Vancouver and Victoria, including SkyTrain and SeaBus stations."We felt that CanWest was not reporting fairly on the Middle East so we undertook this project," said Handel. Handel said his group believes The Sun and other CanWest papers give too much space to the Israeli point of view and doesn’t give enough coverage to the deaths of Palestinians."
"Bent said he thinks The Sun’s coverage of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict has been fair. "I think our job as a newspaper … is to be balanced, fair and accurate with our reporting. I think that’s what we strive to do every day," he said. "I feel pretty good that our reporting on the Middle East is on the mark."
