Netivot HaTorah Students Combat Anti-Israel Media Bias

by Mike Fegelman

Recently, grade seven students at Netivot HaTorah worked together to combat anti-Israel media bias by organizing a letter writing campaign in response to a column published in the Toronto Star which smeared Israel as an “apartheid” state.

Netivot HaTorah is a JK-8 Jewish day school in Toronto, Ontario whose mission is to educate students about “Torah, Israel and Derech Erez.”

Two classes in Netivot HaTorah recently proved their commitment to becoming actively engaged citizens and advocates for Israel. The grade seven students in Mr. Savage and Mrs. Lebowitz’s language arts classes made their voices heard by combatting this anti-Israel commentary.

Students applied their learning about media bias and persuasive letter writing as taught by HonestReporting Canada to write effective letters to the editor of the Toronto Star newspaper. Their letters articulated their responses to the article, all which asserted a strong defence of Israel and which countered the “apartheid” slur.

This was an inspiring real world learning experience for the students to participate thoughtfully and actively in the world around them, supported by Honestreporting Canada.
