LISTEN: CBC Broadcasts On-Air Clarification (AGAIN) After Criticizing Israel For Not Vaccinating Palestinians

February 1, 2021

In a January 29 media action alert, we critiqued a CBC Radio report (listen here) by freelance reporter Irris Makler which unfairly criticized Israel for not vaccinating west bank Palestinians.

As we noted in our alert, the Palestinian Authority is responsible for the health care of its people as mandated by the Oslo Accords, the PA denied Israel’s assistance and are sourcing 4 million vaccine doses from Russia. As well, Israel is giving 5,000 doses of COVID-19 vaccine to front-line Palestinian medical workers. Israel is the only country in the world to have given Palestinians vaccine doses.

We also noted that it’s in Israel’s interest that the Palestinians be vaccinated considering how inter-connected both populaces are and how Palestinians work in Israel proper, but like all countries in this world, Israel is prioritizing vaccinated its citizens first.

Journalist Makler quoted the King of Jordan who spoke at the World Economic Forum and who called on Israel to do more to help vaccinate Palestinians, but no response from an Israeli source was provided by Ms. Makler.

Not asked by the CBC, but what is Jordan doing to help vaccinate Palestinians? Jordan, who formerly occupied the west bank from 1948-67, bears responsibility. Also keep in mind that approximately 2 million Palestinians live in Jordan. Or for that matter, what is Lebanon doing to help vaccinate Palestinians? The answer, next to nothing. These Palestinians have for decades languished in refugee camps. No one is rebuking Lebanon or Jordan for not taking care of Palestinians who live in their respective countries.

We called on HonestReporting Canada’s subscribers to file complaints with CBC Editor-in-Chief Brodie Fenlon and on January 30, CBC Radio broadcast the following on-air clarification:

Yesterday, Irris brought us a story about calls for Israel to help get the Palestinian population of the west bank vaccinated against COVID-19. That call came from the King of Jordan. Israeli officials though say that overall, healthcare administration and the task of offering vaccinations to Palestinians living in the west bank and the Gaza Strip falls to the Palestinian Authority under the Oslo Peace Accords. Palestinian officials for their part have independently negotiated supplies of the AstraZeneca vaccine, as well as Russia’s Sputnik-V shot.”

Keep in mind, it was less than 2 weeks ago that HonestReporting Canada prompted CBC Radio to issue a lengthy on-air correction for propagating the Palestinian vaccine lie.

As well, prior to orating this clarification, CBC freelance reporter Irris Makler produced a two-minute report, also on January 30, about how Israel has vaccinated one third of its population and how the U.K. variant has interrupted its vaccination campaign.

Listen to CBC freelance journalist Irris Makler’s report here:

Makler noted that in Israel, the number of cases, hospitalizations and deaths from COVID-19 remain high and that Israel is a pilot program of the Pfizer and BioNTech vaccine which has seen a 90% efficacy.

HonestReporting Canada thanks CBC News for undertaking this remedial action.
