On October 20, a list of 74 students at Toronto Metropolitan University’s (TMU) Lincoln Alexander School of Law, some named while others were anonymous, signed onto a vehemently anti-Israel letter, which denied Israel’s right to exist.
The letter claimed that “’Israel’ is not a country,” and demanded “an end to the entire system of settler colonialism that has strangled Palestine for the last century.” Israel proclaimed its independence in 1948, so any allegation that the Jewish State has “strangled Palestine for the last century” is a clear and unmistakeable statement that the country is illegitimate and thus has no right to exist.

More scandalously, the letter’s signatories wrote that they “support all forms of Palestinian resistance and efforts towards liberation,” an undeniable justification of Hamas terrorism.
Three days later, the law school condemned the letter, saying it does not “represent the views of our law school” or its staff, faculty or community members.

While the student letter has garnered significant media attention in recent days, the Law Society of Ontario has thus far refused requests from news media outlets to comment on the scandal, though a group of lawyers have spoken out, demanding action be taken by the university.
