Calling it “a great day for the country”, Technion scientist Dan Schechtman was awarded the Nobel Prize for Chemistry for his discovery of quasi-crystals. As the Jerusalem Post reports, the controversy of his finding was so great that Shechtman was asked, at one point, to leave his research group. Shechtman discovered non-repeating patterns in crystals. Prior to his discovery, crystals were thought to possess only repeating patterns.
