In a December 12 letter to the editor published in The Thunder Bay Chronicle Journal, Robert Walker, HonestReporting Canada’s assistant director, rebutted tired accusations of “genocide” against Israel by a letter-writer.
Walker noted that even as Israel faced a truly genocidal Islamic terrorist movement seeking its destruction, “Israel took more care to avoid civilian casualties than any modern military.”
He also pointed out that the root cause of the conflict is not Israel, but radical Islamic ideology.

“Fanatical hatred at the root of conflict” (December 12, 2025)
Letter-writer Gary Kenny complains that the Carney government has not declared Israel’s actions in Gaza “genocidal.”
Even in the face of a truly monstrous terrorist group, Hamas, that embedded itself within Palestinian society and used its own people as human shields, Israel took more care to avoid civilian casualties than any modern military, according to John Spencer, the world’s top expert on urban warfare.
But future wars are basically inevitable until we grapple with the root of the conflict: radical Islamist ideology, and the fanatical refusal to accept Israel’s right to exist.
Like the Nazis before them, Hamas will accept nothing less than the destruction of Israel. There is no negotiation with such hatred, and so all Canadians – for the sake of Israelis and Palestinians alike – must stand behind Israel as it fights a war that Canadians could not imagine having to bear.
