In Sunday’s edition of the Toronto Star, Eugene Lang (visiting fellow at the Munk Centre for International Studies at the University of Toronto) wrote an opinion piece which erroneously stated the following:
"Last summer, in retaliation for Hamas kidnappings of Israeli soldiers, the Israeli military bombed targets inside Lebanon."
Contrary to this statement, the Israeli military bombed targets inside Lebanon as a result of a Hezbollah raid on July 12, where 8 Israeli soldiers were killed and 2 soldiers were kidnapped. In subsequent days over 4,000 rockets were fired at Israel.
Hamas, which is based out of Gaza, also carried out their own kidnapping on June 25, where one Israeli soldier was kidnapped. This brazen act had nothing to do with the Israeli bombing of Lebanon.
