A September 17 CBC.ca report erroneously claimed that “Although Israel evacuated Gaza in 2005, it still controls crossings and has a naval blockade on the tiny Mediterranean strip.”
In doing so, this CBC report falsely implies that Israel controls all of Gaza’s crossings, both in and out, however contrary to this information, Gaza also has a border with Egypt which controls the Rafah border. On May 28, Egypt opened the Rafah border, a move welcomed by Hamas and which angered Israel because of its pressing security concerns. This was a move that CBC.ca also acknowledged in a May 26 article entitled: “Egypt to permanently open Gaza crossing”.
HonestReporting Canada contacted senior editors at the CBC who commendibly issued the following clarification yesterday:
“Corrections and Clarifications: An earlier version of this story suggested Israel controls all movement into or out of the Gaza Strip. An exception is the Rafah crossing, where Gaza shares a border with Egypt. That border is under the control of Cairo. Sept. 19, 2011| 4:58 p.m. ET.”
