HRC Rebuts Hamilton Spectator Letter Writer Who Ignored Hamas Terrorism And Made Baseless Accusations Against Israel

In a recent October 27 letter to the editor in The Hamilton Spectator, Syed Kaleem Khalee asks that the world focus on the suffering of Gazans during the current war between Israel and Hamas. Ironically, however, nowhere in his letter does he mention Hamas or terrorism a single time. Instead, he makes baseless claims, accusing Israel of “indiscriminate Israeli airstrikes,” when Israel has only targeted Hamas terrorists in Gaza, unlike Hamas, which gleefully chased down women and children in Israel.

On October 28, our Assistant Director, Robert Walker, was granted space in The Hamilton Spectator to rebut these baseless claims.

Hamas ideology to blame

In his Oct. 27 letter, “Media should focus on Gaza’s plight,” Syed Kaleem Khaleel asks that the world focus on the suffering of Gazans during the current war between Israel and Hamas. Ironically, nowhere in his letter, where he demands media “fairness, balance and objectivity,” does Khaleel mention Hamas or terrorism a single time, a remarkable omission, given that Hamas’ terrorist attack on Oct. 7 is the foundation for the current war.

Instead, he makes baseless claims, accusing Israel of “indiscriminate Israeli airstrikes,” when Israel has targeted Hamas terrorists in Gaza, unlike Hamas, which gleefully chased down women and children in Israel, before they were murdered three weeks ago, along with 1,400 innocent Israelis, plus 222 more who were stolen as hostages by Hamas. Khaleel demands the media address the “root causes” of the conflict, which he identifies as “the occupation,” seemingly unaware Israel does not, in fact, occupy a single square inch of Gaza, and has not done so for 18 years.

Rather, the true “root cause” of the conflict is Hamas’ fanatical ideology, which — as spelled out in its founding charter — seeks the destruction of Israel through violent means, and the creation of an Islamic theocratic state. No peace will ever come until Hamas can no longer murder Israelis. Until that happens, Israel has a right — and a sacred responsibility — to protect its people from the demonic terror group that is Hamas.
