HRC Prompts Two Corrections on CBC Online

Quality control problems continue at CBC Online. A July 30 CBC.ca report erroneously stated that ?U.S. President George W. Bush called Olmert personally to convey his warm wishes and told him he appreciated the prime minister’s friendship, leadership and work for peace, White House spokesman Gordon Johndroe said.?

Contrary to this statement, Olmert personally phoned Bush and not the other way around. The Associated Press confirmed the veracity of this information.

HRC brought this error to the attention of CBC editors who issued the following correction:

Two other reports dated July 29 and 31 on CBC.ca also contained erroneous information. According to the reports: ?MacDiarmid had been in the West Bank for about a month volunteering for the International Solidarity Movement, a Palestinian-led group that protests the Israeli occupation of the West Bank and Gaza Strip using "non-violent, direct-action" methods.?

Contrary to the above statement, there is no Israeli ?occupation of the? Gaza Strip?. Occupation implies being able to impose your will on the occupied and because Israel disengaged from Gaza, removing 8,500 settlers in the summer of 05 and does not have any soldiers on the ground, this claim does not have any merit. Although Israel does carry out military incursions to thwart and disrupt terror cells, this does not qualify as ?occupation?.
