On January 10, the Globe and Mail published an informative article by reporter Eric Reguly entitled “Hezbollah has to decide whether Iran or Lebanon comes first”.

The article noted that: “Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah has combined Iranian-backed clout, charisma and savvy political maneouvres to keep himself, and his party’s, power intact and expanding, to the point the group has been called a “state within a state.” He is considered more powerful than the prime minister. His militia, created to fight the Israelis, makes the ill-equipped Lebanese military seem ineffective.”

While we applaud the Globe for producing this article, HonestReporting Canada recognized an important error in Mr. Reguly’s article as he erroneously stated the following:

In 2018, a U.S. undersecretary for terrorism and financial intelligence told a conference that Iran funnels about US$700-million a year to Hezbollah (United States, Canada and the European Union consider Hezbollah a terrorist organization; Russia and China do not).”

In truth, the EU only considers the “military wing” of Hezbollah as a terror group, but does not consider the “political wing” as a proscribed terrorist entity. That’s why Jewish groups continue to heavily lobby the EU to fully list Hezbollah as a banned terror group.
