HRC Calls Out Appalling Comparison of Gaza to Concentration Camps

by Mike Fegelman

We were appalled that the Nanaimo Daily News published a letter comparing the current state of the Gaza Strip to the Holocaust’s concentration camps.

In an October 22 letter, Dave Cutts drew a parallel between the murder of over six million Jews in the Holocaust to the strife existing today between Israelis and Palestinians. By invoking the Holocaust in his claim that Gaza is a “modern concentration camp”, Cutts had implicitly compared contemporary Israeli policy of defending itself against Palestinian terrorism to the Nazis efforts to exterminate world Jewry. Such comparisons went well beyond the pale considering that these statements fit the European Union, U.S. State Department’s and Ottawa Protocol’s working definition of anti-Semitism.

Cutts made this analogy to trump up libellous claims that Jews, who were once the victims of the Nazis during the Holocaust, are now the victimizers carrying out the “genocide” of Palestinians.  These kinds of comparisons are not only ignorant and demonstrative of a deep-seated prejudice, but have been described as anti-Semitic in nature and a form of Holocaust denial.
This letter writer’s claims did not hold up to scrutiny and were not deserving of publication by a respected newspaper like the Nanaimo Daily News. We called out this appalling comparison in a rebuttal which the Nanaimo Daily News printed an abridged version of today:
