Gm1_1_1 According to Patrick Martin, the Globe & Mail’s comment pages editor, "Knowledge of history… is essential to being a good journalist in the powder keg that is the Middle East.?

Martin made this statement as part of an address he gave at the University of Winnipeg’s Global College Initiative, which brings speakers to the university to discuss issues of wide social impact.610b2martin_1

Winnipeg Free Press reporter, Joe Paraskevas covered the event and noted that Martin "underlined the importance of social and geographic knowledge in understanding the Middle East.?

"To be able to penetrate the societies of the Middle East, journalists had to work on their own with their translators and organizers on the ground, freeing themselves from the protection so easily offered now by modern military units, Martin said"

"When we send journalists in embedded in our own forces, I think we do a disservice to our readers who get a one-sided view, and I think we do a disservice to the local people because they then think we are choosing sides," he added."
