Globe & Mail And La Presse Headlines Fail To Properly Label Palestinian Terrorism

August 8, 2023

On August 5, the Globe and Mail published an article with the headline entitled: “Gunman opens fire in downtown Tel Aviv day after rampage in occupied West Bank”. Untold in the headline, was not only the fact that the gunman was a Palestinian terrorist, but that he murdered 42-year-old Chen Amir, a Tel Aviv municipal patrolman.

While we acknowledge and appreciate that this information was relayed in the lead paragraph of the Globe’s article, readers who only saw the headline will come to the false conclusion that this incident may have been tied to local crime, versus the actual truth, that this was a premeditated terrorist attack on innocent Israeli civilians.

Furthermore, the original Associated Press article, from which the Globe’s piece derives its information, felt it necessary to provide this vital context in its own headline, stating: “Palestinian shooting attack in downtown Tel Aviv kills Israeli security guard.”

Accordingly, we have filed a complaint with the Globe and Mail asking that this headline be amended and corrected to reflect the AP’s actual headline which was fair, balanced, and accurate. Stay tuned to this page for future updates.

Not to be outdone, on August 6, La Presse published an AFP article with the headline entitled “Les forces israéliennes tuent trois activistes palestiniens” (Israeli forces kill three Palestinian activists) when in reality, the three Palestinians who died were actually terrorist gunmen.

While the article itself reports on the incident, it does not provide adequate context about these circumstances, specifically, the identities of these individuals and their intentions.

According to a report from The Times of Israel, the IDF said a terrorist cell was en route to carrying out a drive-by shooting attack against Israeli civilians in the area of Mevo Dotan, in Judea and Samaria, and Israeli soldiers moved quickly to remove “a real and immediate threat”.

To not mislead its readers, it’s of the utmost importance that La Presse ensures accuracy in its reporting by properly labeling the dead Palestinians as gunmen in its headline, and by providing context within the article about the identities of these individuals and their intentions.

Accordingly, we have filed a complaint with La Presse asking that this headline and article be amended to reflect the truth on the ground and also to promote responsible and accurate journalism. Stay tuned to this page for future updates.
