Yesterday, we called on CTV.ca to correct an article it published the same day which erroneously claims that all dead Palestinians killed during the recent Israel-Hamas conflict were civilians.
The CTV Montreal article incorrectly reported the following: “Over the past month more than 1,900 Palestinian civilians have been killed, many of them civilians.”
Taking Hamas’ claims that a majority of the close to 2,000 dead Palestinians were civilians is one thing, but even worse is CTV’s claiming that all Palestinians dead were “civilians”. The Israel Defense Forces contend it killed some 900 Palestinian terrorists from Hamas, Islamic Jihad, and other terror groups since July 8. Even the BBC and New York Times have acknowledged that Israel’s casualty statistics are most like accurate and that stats from Gaza health officials, AKA Hamas, lack credibility.
In response CTV promptly retracted this claim and amended it from the article. The following reply from CTV sent to HRC Executive Director Mike Fegelman, explains the origin of this error:
Good morning Mr. Fegelman,
By using the word “civilians” twice in the same sentence, our writer inadvertently published a line that was redundant and contradictory.
By removing the first use of “civilians” from the line in question, it is now clear that not all of the victims were civilians.
Thank you very much for bringing this to our attention.
