CBC Issues On-Air Corrections: Israel Didn't Kill Palestinian Protester

On April 4, HonestReporting Canada contacted senior CBC editors to register our concerns over several unfair and inaccurate reports it aired that day about recent violent altercations between Israeli forces and Palestinians in the West Bank.

CBC News Montreal at 5:41pm and CBC Prince Edward Island  at 4:32pm both falsely reported that Israeli soldiers killed three, not two Palestinians in recent violence. The two Palestinians were killed after throwing fire bombs at Israeli soldiers, context which CBC Montreal and P.E.I. did not include.

As we pointed out to the CBC, their reporting produced material errors, significant ones considering that the CBC reported about the fictitious death of a human being.

Subsequent to receiving our complaint, CBC TV Montreal and P.E.I. both issued on-air corrections on April 17 to remedy their errors. The corrections stated the following: “On April 4 we reported about thousands of Palestinian mourners at funerals on the West Bank. At the same time, we said it followed the deaths of three Palestinians during confrontations with Israeli security forces. There were actually two people killed, not three. The CBC regrets the error.”

Regrettably, the CBC again failed to tell its viewers in these corrections that the two dead Palestinians were killed after throwing fire bombs at Israeli soldiers. In so doing, CBC viewers were again deprived of vital context about this incident. Notwithstanding, we thank the CBC for issuing these corrections in an attempt to atone for its falsely reporting that Israeli forces killed a Palestinian protester.
