CBC Broadcasts On-Air Clarification After Anchor Falsely Claims “Israel Started The Hamas War”

December 25, 2023

On the December 21 broadcast of CBC Power & Politics, guest host J.P. Tasker erroneously claimed that “Israel started the Hamas war.”

In fact, it was on October 7, that thousands of Hamas terrorists massacred 1,200 Israelis in what was the largest massacre of Jews since the Holocaust.

Not only did this CBC anchor blame the victim for being the aggressor and for instigating hostilities, but his comment was was replete with historical revisionism.

On social media, the statement made by CBC reporter J.P. Tasker was ceremoniously condemned for helping to fan the flames of hatred against Jews in Canada.

In response, Power  & Politics took to Twitter from its moribund account (now reactivated to respond to this controversy) saying:

“To clarify: There was a teleprompter glitch that cut off part of the prepared script, which read: “That’s just the latest protest taking place in Canada, since Israel declared war on Hamas following the October attacks that left 12-hundred dead.”  The error was not intentional.”

CBC blamed a “teleprompter glitch” for its “Israel started the Hamas war” statement.

In response, HonestReporting Canada conveyed to the CBC that it’s: “duty bound to broadcast an on-air clarification to retract reporter @JPTasker’s falsely claiming that “Israel started the Hamas war,” when the terror group’s massacre of 1,200 Israelis + kidnapping of 240 more, started the war. Israel didn’t start this war, it doesn’t want this war, but will win this war.”

On December 22, CBC Power & Politics broadcast the following on-air clarification by its host:

“An important clarification about a moment on last night’s show. In an introduction to the Power Panel yesterday’s guest host referred to the start of the current Israel-Hamas war, but missed a key line of context in the prepared introduction due to a teleprompter error. The intended scripting was ‘Israel declared war with Hamas following the deadly attacks of October 7 that killed nearly 1200 people.’”

While HonestReporting Canada thanks the CBC for airing this on-air corrective, it cannot be downplayed how egregious this error was, as CBC’s viewers were left with the false understanding that Israel was the aggressor that commenced hostilities against presumably innocent Palestinians in Gaza for no apparent reason, when it was Hamas who launched an act of war in a genocidal quest to murder as many Israelis as possible.
