Calgary Sun Columnist Blurs Resistance and Terrorism

by Mike Fegelman

Columnist_kaufmann_bill1 In two consecutive columns ("Conflicts and casualties" ? Dec. 30 and "2006: Year of chaos and transition"? Dec. 31), Calgary Sun columnist Bill Kaufman characterized both Hamas and Hezbollah as "resistance" groups.

Borrowing from the Palestinian and Lebanese lexicon, Mr. Kaufman?s value judgment clouds readers’ understanding of these organizations’ identities and intentions. Referring to groups that attack civilians and proclaim their genocidal intentions as "resistance organizations" implies to readers such "resistance" is legitimate.
