Another False Arrest at CTV Newsnet

by Mike Fegelman

CTV Newsnet host Kate Wheeler interviewed Middle East Bureau Chief Janis Mackey Frayer yesterday about Hamas prime minister Ismail Haniyeh’s failed attempt to smuggle $35-million in cash into Gaza. Returning from a "fundraising trip abroad," Haniyeh was prevented from crossing into Gaza with the money. Once he left the cash behind, he was allowed in.

Yet as Mackey Frayer described the situation, a "super" (the text floating at the bottom of the screen) inaccurately declared: ?Palestinian P.M. Arrested.?

Amazingly, this is not the first time that CTV has inaccurately claimed Haniyeh was arrested. Just under 6 months ago, on June 29, CTV Newsnet anchor Ravi Baichwal falsely reported that Israel had arrested Haniyeh (see our exclusive investigation and video here.) After we complained, CTV admitted the error and acknowledged how important it is that "journalists be extra diligent in vetting such stories."

We couldn’t agree more.
