A Photo of the Day published by the Quebec daily Le Quotidien on October 30 showed an Agence-France Presse image of a Palestinian boy releasing a duck skyward with a caption that incorrectly read: “A Palestinian boy plays with a duck near the family home in the prison camp Omar Massoud, held by Israel since 1993”.

Yet, Agence-France Presse’ own caption to the photo reads:  “A boy launches a duck in the sky near the family home of Omar Massud, Palestinian prisoner since 1993, released by Israel”.

Unlike AFP, Le Quotidien made the egregious claim that there is a prison camp in Israel and it is called Omar Massoud. Yet, there are no prison camps in Israel, and Israel has no prisons by that name.

After communicating our concerns with editors at Le Quotidien, the following correction was promptly issued, although no explicit clarification to its readership that there are no prison camps in Israel was included in this correction:

“A transcription error slipped into the caption of the “photo of the day” published on page 11 of yesterday’s Daily. Thus, it was necessary to read the description originally accompanying the AFP photo: “A boy launches a duck in the sky near the family home of Omar Massud, Palestinian prisoner since 1993, released by Israel.”

Un camp de prisonniers en Israël? Le Quotidien publie une correction

La Photographie du Jour qui a apparue hier sur Le Quotidien montre un garçon palestinien tenant un canard. L’image est accompagnée d’une légende: «Un garçon palestinien joue avec un canard près de la maison familiale, dans le camp de prisonniers Omar Massoud, détenu par Israël depuis 1993. Israël se prépare toutefois à autoriser d’autres libérations conformément aux engagements pris lors des plus récents pourparlers de paix”.

Cette image est issue de l’Agence France Presse dont sa propre légende se lit comme suit: “Un garçon lance un canard dans le ciel près de la maison de la famille de Omar Massoud, détenu palestinien depuis 1993, relâché par Israël”.

Contrairement à l’AFP, Le Quotidien soutient qu’il existe un camp de prisonniers en Israël appelé Omar Massoud. Or, Il n’y existe nullement de camp de prisonniers en Israël et de plus il n’y a aucune prison en Israël avec le nom “Omar Massoud”.

Suite a notre correspondence avec l’editeur du Quotidien qui avait cité  une erreur de retranscription, la correction suivante a été publiée aujourd’hui, alors qu’aucune clarification explicite à l’effet qu’il n’existe pas de camps de prisonniers en Israël n’a été incluse dans ces précisions :
